Rumours have begun to circulate online of the ‘long-list’ (a preliminary stage before the shortlist) for the BBC Sound of 2012 poll. Music blog wotyougot.com, described by The Guardian as the “wikileaks of pop”, reports that 15 acts have made the list, with the official announcement to be made shortly after midnight tomorrow morning (December 5th).
Previous winners of the “Sound Of” poll include Jessie J in 2011, Adele in 2008, and 50 Cent in 2003, so it is a relatively accurate source of musical opinion. Non-winning nominees who have also gone on to major success include The Vaccines (2011), Florence and the Machine (2009), Kaiser Chiefs (2005) and McFly (2004).
The 15 acts are as follows:
- A$ap Rocky
- Azealia Banks
- Dot Rotten
- Dry the River
- Flux Pavilion
- Frank Ocean
- Friends
- Jamie N Commons
- Lianne La Havas
- Michael Kiwanuka
- Niki & the Dove
- Ren Harvieu
- Skrillex
- Spector
- Stooshie
Of particular note are dubstep artists Flux Pavilion (famous for his song ‘Bass Cannon‘) and Skrillex (known for many remixes in the past year), Azealia Banks (topper of the NME Cool List 2011), and Michael Kiwanuka (who recently supported Adele on tour).
